Overview

The skills you need to thrive as a counselor aren’t just learned in a classroom—they’re built through experience. Students of the Master of Arts in Counseling program at CMU Online get to practice with real people, with real needs, all while learning more about the profession. When you get a master’s degree in counseling, you’ll join the ranks of skilled, caring counselors who work every day to help individuals and families face life’s greatest challenges.

You’ll choose a concentration in addiction, clinical mental health, or school counseling, and you’ll get the chance to have real world experiences with clients or students through an internship. Offered in a flexible format, you will take classes online live and asynchronously on a part- time basis, making it possible to fit your continuing education into even the most demanding of schedules.

Counseling: Addiction Counseling Concentration, Master of Arts

Your Goal:

Understand the factors leading to addiction, and how to prevent and treat individuals with substance use disorders.

About the Program:

The societal need for professionals who can help mitigate the harm of addiction is ever growing, and unlikely to abate in the near future. In the MA in Counseling with a concentration in addiction counseling, you’ll learn how to help individuals overcome their dependence on drugs and alcohol. You’ll cover critical areas of substance abuse, harm reduction, and more through courses such as:

  • Introduction to Counseling for Addictions
  • Neuropsychopharmacology
  • Etiology of Addiction
  • Addiction Oriented Systems and Methods of Care

Program Outcomes:

With an MA in Counseling with a focus on addiction counseling, you’ll be prepared to work at community-based social service agencies, institutions of higher education, criminal justice institutions, public and private schools, and private practice. This concentration is suited to those interested in qualifying for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in Michigan, who want to become a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) and who wishes to work in the addiction field.

Counseling: Clinical Mental Health Counseling Concentration, Master of Arts

Prepare to help clients manage and cope with addiction, crisis, and trauma.

About the Program:

Students of the Master of Arts in Counseling with a concentration in clinical mental health will gain knowledge and experience on counseling theories, ethics, philosophy, and techniques, as well as research group techniques, testing procedures, career development, and consulting. Elective hours will allow you to gain additional knowledge and experience in areas of particular interest. You’ll cap off your program with a practicum and internship where you’ll gain real-world, first-hand experience working with clients. You’ll gain expertise through courses such as:

  • Clinical Mental Health Counseling
  • Introduction to Counseling for Addictions
  • Crisis and Trauma Counseling
  • Psychopathology
  • Couple and Family Counseling

Program Outcomes:

Counseling: School Counseling Concentration, Master of Arts

Prepare to provide specialized treatment and intervention tailored to the needs of children and teens in a K-12 setting.

About the Program:

Children and teens are just as susceptible to addiction, crisis, and trauma as adults—if not more so. Treatment and intervention methods must be tailored to the specific needs of people whose bodies and brains are still developing. You’ll gain knowledge and experience on counseling theories, ethics, philosophy, and techniques, all as they directly pertain to children, adolescents, and young adults. You’ll gain relevant expertise through courses such as:

  • Introduction to School Counseling
  • Postsecondary Planning for School Counselors
  • Introduction to Counseling for Addiction
  • School Counseling Seminar
  • Counseling Children and Adolescents
  • Crisis and Trauma Counseling

Program Outcomes:

The School Counseling option is designed for students with Teacher Certification who wish to earn a School Counselor Endorsement or non-teachers who wish to earn a School Counselor License. When you graduate with an MA in Counseling featuring a concentration in school counseling, you’ll be prepared to work in elementary schools, middle schools, secondary schools, or K-12 schools. School Counseling graduates meet the academic requirements for professional counseling licensure in Michigan.

Postgraduate School Counseling Certificate Program

Your Goal:

To develop the theory, techniques, and best practices to become an effective licensed school counselor who can guide the personal and academic success of diverse student populations in K-12 academic settings.

About the Program: 

The online Postgraduate School Counseling Certificate will prepare you to address the academic, career and social/emotional development needs of modern K-12 students in a variety of school settings. Through the comprehensive coursework, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of foundational topics, methods of counseling for children and adolescents, and postsecondary planning. Students will also complete an internship experience to help build confidence in administering counseling services in an actual K-12 setting.

Your Postgraduate School Counseling Certificate serves as an excellent pathway for students with a master’s degree in counseling who want to become a licensed or endorsed school counselor. As a student in this school counseling certificate program, you can take advantage of fully online, asynchronous and synchronous coursework.

Program Outcomes:

You will earn your graduate certificate in Postgraduate School Counseling with the skills you need for K-12 counselor roles in elementary, middle and high school.
